INSIDE THE ‘DERBYSHIRE SUITE’
The eight musicians of JET COLLECTIVE first came together on the hottest weekend of the summer in 2011 to play and create some new music – and then perform it on the Sunday evening –
WHO KNEW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN?
What did happen was that they created a new suite of music inspired by Derbyshire landscapes, customs and tales – The ‘DERBYSHIRE SUITE’ was first performed in June 2011 in Stanton in Peak and received an ecstatic reception with standing ovations.
Expanded to the complete suite for a performance in Winster in October, it now consists of 13 pieces reflecting inspirations ranging from morris dancing, the natural environment and ancient stone circles to industrial heritage, personal experiences, and modern commerce. The musicians bring influences from folk, rock, classical and all with a strong jazz background. The music, with titles like ‘Storm over Derbyshire’, ‘Mills and Hills, Mines and Moors’, ‘Eyam’, ‘Shaw Croft’, ‘Arbor Low’, ‘Summer Peaks’, ‘The Devil’s Elbow’, draws on various styles and it all has a strong jazz influence with improvisation an important component.
To coincide with the album’s release, they are performing the full suite as part of the Buxton Festival Fringe, in the beautiful BUXTON METHODIST CHURCH.
Get your tickets as soon as you can, or pay on the door.
A number of JET Collective members will be around on Fringe Sunday (Jul 8th) in Buxton Pavilion Gardens – so come and have a chat and grab a flyer from them! http://jetcollective.wordpress.com/forthcoming-events/
The musicians come from various musical backgrounds, all having jazz as a common love.
Karen Clegg’s voice is dark and smoky and she plays a mean melodica and flute. Steve Salfield and Sara Littlefield are both fine expressive sax players. On keyboards Wendy Kirkland, Paul Biggins and Karen Clegg all play brilliantly and bring different interpretations.
Reg Clegg and Pat Sprakes both double on guitar. Reg brings a strong funk and blues influence while Pat is a jazz guitar virtuoso. Paul and Pat also both double on bass and Spanish guitar. Clive Loveday is a wonderful jazz drummer who has a rare ability to listen and interact with the harmony and melodies.
The recently released studio recording of the ‘DERBYSHIRE SUITE’ will be available on CD at the Buxton Fringe performance, from the JET Collective directly, or available to download from i-tunes, amazon and other online sites.

Praise for the JET COLLECTIVE & the ‘DERBYSHIRE SUITE’.
The suite has had some fantastic reviews already :
“Wonderful exciting music – so vibrant, and of such quality. Jazz themes but with folk hints lurking in the background. It caught the mood and experiences of Derbyshire, from the mines to the morris men. The JET Collective definitely deserves a much bigger stage. If only a BBC producer had been present!!”
“Just listened to the recordings and they are brilliant. This is interesting & beautifully crafted music!”
“Sounds great, excellent compositions, recording and performances!”
“A fantastic sound – the pieces were all so unique”
