Hi Friends

I’m re-emerging and have a few nice spring gigs coming up.

JAZZ BREAKFASTS AND BRUNCHES seem to be my new specialty – in village halls and also for birthdays and the like.

BACK SEAT JIVERS has a gig too after several years gap – it’s a private party so I’m afraid if you want to hear us you’ll have to book us for another gig.

A new exciting development for me is the JET JAZZ COLLECTIVE. Nine or 10 musicians will spend a weekend inventing a new suite of music inspired by Derbyshire Landscapes and then performing it on the Sunday evening – who knows what will happen?

Sunday 15th May 2011. Winster Jazz Cafe jazz breakfast. Burton Institute, Winster. 11am.

Steve Salfield Quartet. I play with 3 wonderful musicians Wendy Kirkland on piano, Pat Sprakes double bass and Clive Loveday drums. These jazz breakfasts have been very popular and usually sell out in advance, so please buy your tickets soon.

360 Degrees in Sheffield

These concerts in the Crucible Studio by 360 Degrees are one of the best things about Sheffield.
The musicians are world class. I attended the concert on January 22nd when they performed a varied programme – Stravinsky then Beethoven then Rachmaninov. It was brilliant as usual.

Friday 12th November, 2010

Steve Salfield Jazz Trio – Steve on saxes, with two excellent musicians: Wendy Kirkland on piano keyboard and Pat Sprakes on double bass and guitar. Wendy is well known for her excellent hammond organ trio – Organik Trio and for her piano playing. Pat is a wonderful guitarist and double bass player.

The band will be playing some jazz standards, and also some less well known numbers.

The Red Lion is a great little pub with many awards. The food is very good. It was ranked the 4th best Red Lion in the UK out of 900, in 2006, CAMRA pub of the year for Matlock and the dales in 2010 and has awards for homemade cheese and pasta.

The village hall is a typical, charming Derbyshire village hall. The surrounding countryside is beautiful so a country walk would be a great way to finish the day after your jazz breakfast.

Berlin

Berlin
I had always avoided visiting Berlin. I suppose I didn’t want to give them the benefit of my presence. Berlin had kicked out my family in the 1930’s.
But this June, at short notice, decided to relent.
We arrived to jubilation in the streets – but not for us. Germany had just beaten Australia 4-1 in the 2010 world cup and young men were banging on the roof of the taxi and shouting and dancing in the street. Our Turkish driver was amused.
Circus Hotel at Rosenthaler Platz http://www.circus-berlin.de/circus_hotel_berlin.html in Mitte, in what was East Berlin, is one of the nicest hotels Jacquie and I have ever stayed in. An old building which has been stylishly and functionally renovated with a nice outside courtyard – sunny at breakfast time, good unfussy food, and reasonably priced for a European capital city. A young man from Malta was playing guitar and singing rock songs in the bar when we arrived. There is a brass plate on the wall outside acknowledging the earlier Jewish owners who had been murdered by the Nazis. The young staff were exceptionally charming, and eager to advise how to get about Berlin. Not a straight forward business as I was going around Berlin on my mobility scooter. (They also have a very inexpensive Circus Hostel across the road).
Taxi drivers were easy going about putting my scooter in the boot for no extra charge. It’s a small scooter which can quickly be taken to pieces and reassembled.
Caught a taxi over to the west. Went to the building in Kurfustendamm where my mother Liss and her sister Nell lived in a flat as children. The poshest shopping street in Berlin. Downstairs is a Louis Vuitton shop. Unexpectedly I found myself in tears. On the way back out west Berliner taxi driver complained about the unattractive modern buildings and she told us Berlin is much worse since the wall came down.
A 4 hour guided walk around many of the areas of historical interest organised by Brewers Walking Tours – http://www.brewersberlintours.com was the best way imaginable to see Berlin. A 4 hour walk? Of course, I did it on my mobility scooter which was a perfect way for me to join this tour and our guide was very helpful about it.
Our guide, a young Australian guy who has made Berlin his home, was extremely knowledgeable, interesting and amusing. We heard the history, saw some of the sights – Checkpoint Charlie, the very moving Holocaust Memorial, Brandenberg Gate, but also learned about some places like the Tacheles artists colony on Oranienberg Strasse which started off as a squat, and were taken to a nondescript carpark built on the site of Hitler’s bunker – no signs or other paraphernalia, so as not to attract the attention of neo-nazis.
Berliner Philharmoniker at Pottsdamer Platz. A great concert by Deutsches Symphonie Orchester and the place to see aged Berliners on a night out.
Went with scooter on a trip to Wannsee on the S-bahn. Find a station with a lift – they are marked on the maps. Drive the scooter to the front of the train, wave to the engine driver who gets off the train with a smile, gets a ramp and you drive on (you can also do this on the U-bahn. Wannsee is a pretty lake with some tour boats and a few uninteresting cafes. Went to 3 Ansandwerder, opposite Wannsee station which is where Liss, Nell and family moved to after the family money was lost in the depression and rampant inflation of the early 1930s. My Grandfather said he woke up one day and discovered he had married for love.
B flat jazz club on Rosenthaler Strasse http://www.b-flat-berlin.de – nice easy going jazz club with friendly people. I didn’t enjoy Kalima/Blaser/Huber Trio who made an unpleasant sound and played perhaps atonal jazz, but did enjoy the Radeberger beer and the charming, chatty girl who brought it.
Had an extensive wander around Mitte – Jacquie walking and me on scooter. An interesting area with small shops, cafes etc. We were struck by occasional small brass plates in the pavements, outside buildings previously owned by jewish people, who had been deported to Auschwitz and murdered. Also took the scooter by U-bahn to Kreutzberg – then a wander around for window shopping and people watching. Had a Turkish meal. Danced with some street musicians. Took a ride back to Schonefeld airport with another friendly taxi driver who pointed out where he was brought up, just on the west side of the wall.
Berlin was calm, cheerful and laid back. Pushbikes everywhere. In the streets young people predominantly. Much less frenetic than London, easier to move about, traffic flows reasonably smoothly.
(I recommend Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood – atmospheric for Berlin in the 1930’s and beautifully written.)

Note please. Unfortunately the gig scheduled for the Albert in Bakewell on Friday July 17th is cancelled as the restaurant has closed.

Saturday 18 July, 2-5pm. Winster Secret Gardens – an intriguing insight into the back yards of Winster (there are some beautiful and surprising gardens and delicious refreshements) with Salfield/Chandler Quartet playing in the garden at Headlands, East Bank.

Sunday 19 July, 2-5pm. Winster Secret Gardens again with Salfield/Chandler Quartet playing at Headlands again.

Monday 10 August. Rising Sun, Fulwood Road, Sheffield. Salfield/Chandler (modern jazz quartet) will perform in this pub which is getting a big reputation for music of all kinds.

Saturday 15th August. H’s Winebar, Bakewell, with Matt Chandler

Wednesday 19 August. Lescar pub, Sharrowvale Road, Sheffield. Salfield/Chandler play this well known jazz club.

September 2009

Friday 11 September, evening. Youlgreave music festival

Sunday 13 September, 2pm. Wirksworth art and architecture festival

Interspersed are various weddings and private parties. We’d love to play at your function too.

During June and July the various Steve Salfield bands are quite busy.

June and July Gigs

H’s Winebar Bakewell. Saturday June 27th 2009

I’ll be blowing my own horn once more. This time with the marvellous Curt Shaw on guitar, playing from about 8-11pm. I say Curt is marvellous because he has a reputation of being marvellous and I’ve been wanting an opportunity to play with him. I’ve never actually heard him or even met him so it should be interesting for all of us.

It’s a lovely place with a restaurant, winebar and an outside terrace for a warm evening. You can come for just a drink if you like.

Good food, good wine and lovely people.

Art and Jazz in Winster Church June 30th 2009

Winster is having an art exhibition in St John the Baptist Church, Winster from Monday June 29th to Saturday July 4th.

There’s some great work being shown in a special setting.

By far the best way to experience the exhibition is on Tuesday June 30th from 6 to 8 pm when The Steve Salfield Duo (that’s me and the brilliant Pat Sprakes on guitar) will be playing in this wonderful space and a glass of wine or two will be served. Prayers are optional.

Just turn up.

Steve Salfield with old mate Matt Chandler will be at Albert Restaurant once more on Friday July 17th 2009, playing from about 8-11pm.

Here is info on an exciting new gig:

This FRIDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 5th, I play at a brand new venue, THE ALBERT RESTAURANT AND WINEBAR in Bakewell on Bridge Street, DE45 1DS.

It’s a great spot and it would be great if you could make it. When booking it wouldn’t hurt to ask “is it really true that Steve Salfield is playing there”.

Then the management might give me another gig. You can book a table for dinner or you can have a drink in the winebar.

I’ll be playing with wonderful guitarist and good friend, Pat Sprakes. I’m looking forward to a good first night there.

Sunday 7^th September 2-4pm. Wirksworth Arts and Architecture Trail, at Memorial Gardens, 2-2.40 and 3.20-4

Salfield/Chandler – Our Quartet, Steve on sax, Matt Chandler on electric guitar, Richard Keates double bass, Clive Loveday drums. We play some original compositions, some well known tunes and some less well known, beautiful numbers.

The original material is developed by Salfield and Chandler who get together for improvising and composing sessions. When promising ideas emerge, they are developed into themes or new tunes, which form the basis for the quartet’s improvising material. The result is a mix of wistful free ideas, funky rhythmic dance numbers, melodic waltzes and anything else that emerges.

It’s an interesting afternoon with many art exhibitions in various venues around Wirksworth and a lot of live music – so don’t miss it.
